Trenton mayor Tony Mack is accused of accepting bribes from developer

The mayor of Trenton, N.J.,Tony Mack, has been arrested amid allegations that he accepted bribes from a developer who was hoping to a build parking garage on city-owned property.

Mack was arrested early this morning, an FBI spokesperson told CNN. He is accused of conspiracy to corrupt commerce by extortion. His brother Ralphiel Mack was also charged in connection with the scheme, which was uncovered in a sting operation. The FBI had apparently been looking into Mack’s activities for two years.

“The investigation revealed evidence of a conspiracy among these defendants and others to corrupt certain functions of Trenton City government in favor of purported developer seeking to build a parking garage on city-owned property in exchange for cash payments totaling approximately $119,000,” according to the complaint.

In one instance, Mack is alleged to have accepted an envelope stuffed with cash from an FBI informant posing as an employee of the fictitious developer. [CNN]Katherine Clarke
