The city is looking to clean up another neglected bit of New York’s infrastructure: its many piers and wharfs, the Wall Street Journal reported.

The long-neglected wooden structures need further maintenance, in light of rising numbers of microscopic water worms, and other problems, city officials told the Journal. The New York City Economic Development Corp. issued a request for proposals yesterday for ways to inexpensively fix up the piers.

The city has spent billions cleaning up the waterfront in recent years, and getting the piers in shape is the final piece of the puzzle. However, the aging infrastructure on the city’s 560-mile shoreline is expensive to maintain, officials said.

“Either we as a city are going to need to find more money or we are going to have to figure out how to spend the money more efficiently,” Seth Pinsky, who heads the EDC, told the Journal. [WSJ] Guelda Voien
