Barclays Center

Parking garages near the Barclays Center are jacking up prices and considering arena shuttle service in hopes of reaping the benefits of Brooklyn’s new arena.

Some garage owners are offering flat rates — $30 dollars at the corner of Atlantic and Grand Avenues more than a half-mile from the stadium— or considering shuttle service for the arena’s Nets games, concerts, and other events.

Driving to the stadium is discouraged by city officials, as the arena seats 18,000 but offers just 650 on-site spaces (including 150 VIP spots) and 700 spots in nearby private garages, but there are 1,400 parking spaces in private garages within a half-mile of the stadium, the Wall Street Journal reported.

Some garages have even begun advertising for Barclays events, which kick off tonight with the first of eight Jay-Z concerts.

Nearby areas have seen rising rents and a surge of new restaurants and bars, thanks to the arena. [WSJ] — Jane C. Timm
