A Long Island City rehearsal space will offer below-market space rentals to performing artists on an hourly basis.

The 3,800-square-foot Spaceworks LIC at 33-02 Skillman Avenue is a pilot project of Spaceworks, a nonprofit organization that aims to open at least five affordable workspaces for city artists. The Long Island City space consists of three rehearsal studios and one music studio, and artists can rent rooms for as little as $12 an hour.

“Artists tell us that the demand for studio and rehearsal space far exceeds supply,” Mayor Michael Bloomberg said at the opening of the new site, which was attended by DNAinfo.

Spaceworks is in the process of setting up another location in Gowanus, and has plans for future sites at the Brooklyn Public Library’s Williamsburg and Red Hook branches and on Governors Island, officials told DNAinfo. [DNAinfo]Hiten Samtani
