The Real Deal December 2013
The Real Deal December 2013

In many ways, 2013 was a historic year for New York City real estate, as price records were shattered on both the commercial and residential fronts. But 2014 is bound to bring some changes, what with a new mayor in Bill de Blasio, growing unease about interest rates and worries that new condominium projects may not be able to live up to their sky-high expectations. This month, The Real Deal compiled a list of the key issues and projects set to make waves in the coming year, in our December cover story, “What’s ahead in 2014,” now available online.

In such a cutthroat environment, it’s inevitable that real estate players will butt heads. But these battles take on an additional dimension when they’re waged between members of the same family. In “Real estate’s biggest feuds,” we look at some of the more high-profile family disputes in the industry, such as the clash between siblings in the Feil Organization and the war of words within the Macklowe clan.

We also step out of the city to document “The priciest listings in the burbs,” looking at mansions in Nassau, Bergen, Fairfield and Westchester counties. And we try to pin down what exactly Young Woo hopes to achieve with his “SuperPier” retail project on Manhattan’s Far West Side.

There’s tons more in this issue, including a look at residential buildings with scanty sales and a report card on the newest contenders in the commercial brokerage business.

Finally, in our Closing interview, Robert Ivanhoe, veteran real estate lawyer and co-chairman of the New York office of Greenberg Traurig, talks about his childhood, his one and only blind date and nearly investing with Bernie Madoff.
