WEEKENDEDITION South Williamsburg just got its first grocery. Those that live below Grand Street currently have to trudge to Marlow & Daughters for their pastured pork and sprouted spelt, but now locals can shop at the brand new Urban Market of Williamsburg.

The store, which is located at 11 Broadway Across Kent Avenue from the East River, is roughly 16,000 square-foot and offers both specialty and traditional food and home products.

“The area south of the Williamsburg Bridge has faced historically low access to healthy fresh food,” Judi Kende, a senior vice president at the Low Income Investment Fund, told the New York Observer. “Urban Market fills this gap and integrates a grocery store into the community by locating it in a mixed-income housing development.”

L+M Development Partners marketed the property, which was leased by Great Jones Realty to shop owners Colin Xie and Jason Chung, who also operate grocery stores in Forest Hills and Far Rockaway. [NYO] Christopher Cameron
