The residents of an apartment building in Kensington have joined the growing ranks of New Yorkers who’ve been coping with cold homes due to a lack of adequate heat.

Brooklynites at 377 Ocean Parkway saw temperatures inside the building drop to 51 degrees last week — five degrees below the minimum nighttime standard.

“There’s no heat for hours — and sometimes days,” said first-floor tenant Mizanur Rahman to the New York Daily News. The 46-unit building, owned by 377 Realty Associates, has 205 open violations for everything from peeling paint to broken boilers, the Daily News reported. The city has spent almost $12,000 on the building for emergency repairs.

Residents in other parts of the borough recently filed suit against their own landlords for failing to provide adequate heat. The number of freeze complaints the city has received from New Yorkers this season jumped 6.5 percent compared to last winter, according to the article. [NYDN]Angela Hunt
