New York state Assemblywoman Joan Millman has proposed a bill that bar all long-term care facilities statewide from shutting down or cutting staff over the next two years. In one instance, the legislation would save Prospect Park Residence, a nine-story assisted living facility at 1 Prospect Park West in Park Slope, from closure.

The building’s owner, Haysha Deitsch, had planned to close it down and reportedly convert the site into condominiums. More than 100 elderly residents would be displaced if the facility were to close. The Department of Health had approved Deitsch’s plans to close it. Deitsch purchased the 153,067-square-foot building for more than $40 million in 2006.

Millman, as well as Council member Brad Lander and Assemblyman James Brennan, issued a joint statement earlier this month opposing the plan, citing the shortage of senior housing in the city. [Brownstoner]Mark Maurer
