Modernist UES townhouse returns to market with price hike

UPDATED, 12:44 p.m., April 17: A modernist Upper East Side townhouse, last sold in 2008 for $12 million, is back on the market.

Designed by Swiss modernist architect William Lescaze and constructed in 1934, the home is located at 32 East 74th Street, next door to Daniel E. Straus’ Whitney condominiums. The property last hit the market in 2010 asking $14 million, but then was pulled in February of last year after the owner decided she was too attached to the home to sell, broker Joanna Cutler told The Real Deal. But now it’s back — with a 39 percent price jump to $19.5 million.

One wall in the 4,895-square-foot pad boasts “different kinds of glass — clear, rippled, diffused and glass bricks” that create “a kaleidoscope of color,” according to the listing. Designated a landmark in 1976, the six-bedroom home has reportedly been in need of renovations since first hitting the market back in 2010.
