Work is under way at Clinton Hill’s quirky Broken Angel building, a tenement-turned-art project that will now become ten condominiums.

The permit issued for 4 Downing Street specifies interior and exterior renovation, and a downshift in the number of units from nine to eight, Brownstoner reported. The work is expected to cost $1.1 million in total, and another two condominium units will join the eight at 8 Downing Street.

Owner Alex Barrett of Barrett Design and Development closed on a $4.1 million deal for the 4-6 Downing Street house and adjacent lot in January. Conversion plans are moving forward despite ex-owner Arthur Wood’s hopes of regaining the property, which fell into foreclosure in 2008.

Wood and his wife Cynthia purchased Broken Angel in 1979 and installed art works and stained-glass windows. A 2006 fire ripped through the home in 2006, and the owners attempted a condominium conversion along with Madison Realty Capital. Madison filed to foreclose in 2008, and the property went up for auction in March 2012. [Brownstoner]Julie Strickland
