Port Authority should move forward, federal grant or not, locals say

Overwhelmed by the slew of buses outside homes and businesses, Hell’s Kitchen residents are asking the Port Authority to move forward with a proposed bus garage — with or without financial help from the federal government.

The $400 million Galvin Plaza Bus Annex would house 100 buses and provide direct access to both the Lincoln Tunnel and bus terminal. As the Port Authority awaits word on a $230 million federal grant that would partially fund the project, residents told DNAinfo they are growing increasingly frustrated with idling buses, traffic congestion and deteriorating air quality.

A spokesman for the Port Authority told DNAinfo the agency would cover the remainder of the annex’s price tag if the Federal Transit Administration chips in. Residents, however, told the news site they believe the project should move forward immediately, and that it could be funded through the agency’s capital budget should the grant fall through.

A total of 8,500 buses carry passengers back and forth over the Hudson River daily, Veronica Vanterpool, executive director of the Tri-State Transportation Campaign, told DNAinfo, but the Port Authority has few plans in place to improve its bus infrastructure. [DNAinfo] – Kerry Barger
