The Landmarks Preservation Commission approved new signage for 30 Rock yesterday, in a move that will bring down the giant General Electric sign at the tower’s apex.

Known since 1988 as the GE Building, the property at 30 Rockefeller Plaza has been owned by the Philadelphia-based cable provider Comcast since March 2013. Comcast consequently applied to change up all of the signage on the 70-story building, a move which required a thumbs up from the LPC.

Comcast’s new signs will include a logo that combine’s NBC’s avian symbol with the company name, and they will be featured on the north and south sides of the building, while a solo peacock will be on the west side. The new signs will stand 24 feet tall on the north and south sides, 18 feet on the west side and use amber-colored LEDs instead of neon, Curbed reported.

The complex also includes a second building at 1250 Avenue of the Americas, at which Comcast also asked to remove two of the three marquees, on the north and south sides, and replace the one in the middle with a new marquee that reads “The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon.”

The LPC endorsed both applications. The Historic Districts Council also voiced support, praising the move to revamp the Sixth Avenue marquees in particular.

“The removal of the two marquees flanking the center is a welcomed change, as they had unfortunately been obscuring the 1933 Art Deco glass mural above the doorway,” the HDC said. [Curbed]Julie Strickland
