A plan to move the 1931-built Aluminaire House to Sunnyside, Queens has been scrapped.

Residents were vehemently opposed to the plan of to bring the country’s first all-metal house to the neighborhood and building an eight-unit terra cotta building around it. Instead, the structure will likely be moved to Palm Springs, Calif., according to Curbed.

The Aluminaire House was once part of an exhibit at the long-shuttered Grand Central Palace hall near Grand Central Terminal. The house was built to show the advantages of building a home with industrial materials.

Albert Frey, one of the house’s architects, was born there. The mayor of Palm Springs is raising $600,000 to complete the process of disassembling, transporting and re-assembling the structure, close to the Palm Springs Art Museum. [Curbed] — Claire Moses
