Cooper Hewitt reopens after $91M renovation

The overhaul expanded the UES museum’s exhibition space

Cooper–Hewitt, Smithsonian Design Museum – the Gilded Age home of Andrew Carnegie – has reopened its doors following a $91 million overhaul.

Three years ago, the building on 91st Street and Fifth Avenue closed down for an extensive renovation, according to Curbed. The project added 60 percent more space for exhibitions.

Additions include a library and a new back-end operations facility in Two Townhouses The Cooper Hewitt Owns On 90th Street. The move allows the second floor to showcase more of its permanent collection. The redone third floor is now devoted to temporary exhibitions. [Curbed]Christopher Cameron
