Douglas Durst, chair of the Durst Organization, believes that his brother — black sheep and alleged murderer Robert Durst — continued to plot to kill him as recently as last month.

As “The Jinx,” an HBO documentary series about Robert Durst’s life, aired, the black sheep of the family was believed to be only miles away from Douglas’ Florida home, the New York Times reported.

“We had information that Bob was five or 10 minutes away from my house in Florida,” Douglas Durst told the newspaper.

The Durst Organization chairman told the newspaper that on February 22 — the night on which the third episode of the six-part series was aired — his older brother was in Riviera beach, less than nine miles away from the family’s Palm Beach house, the newspaper reported.

“We had to have security staying in the house,” Douglas Durst told the newspaper.

Robert Durst has since been arrested for the alleged murder of his friend Susan Berman in Los Angeles in 2000 and is being held in a psychiatric facility outside of New Orleans. Earlier this week, he was linked to the 1971 disappearance of a female Burlington College student.

The documentary and subsequent arrest of his brother has relieved Douglas Durst, who also feared for the safety of his eldest daughter, Anita.

“I no longer am looking over my shoulder,” Douglas Durst told the newspaper. “I’m very grateful to ‘The Jinx’ for having brought this about.” [NYT] — Claire Moses
