  • New pop-up shops don’t sell anything

    From the December issue: Temporary retail stores, known as “pop-ups,” have been quite literally popping up in New York City for several years now, often hawking seasonal items at Halloween and Christmas. But a new breed of pop-ups is emerging, industry insiders say: Non-retail ventures, from PayPal to the TV show “Celebrity Apprentice,” are opening temporary locations on New York’s heavily trafficked streets.

    “We are seeing some unusual ones, in addition to [temporary] fashion shops,” said Faith Hope Consolo, chairman of Prudential Douglas Elliman’s Retail Group.

    Unlike most pop-up stores, which primarily aim to sell merchandise, these non-retail pop-ups are more focused on publicity and marketing. [more]

  • Architecture firm signs lease in Flatiron

    Insite123 Development, an architecture and design firm, signed a five-year, 2,880-square-foot lease on the fourth floor of 45 West 21st Street in the Flatiron District, effective April 1. The rent price was not disclosed. Insite123 was represented by Aliza Weston of Legacy Real Estate. The landlord, 45 West 21st Street Associates, was represented by Mark Furst of Cassidy Turley. Insite 123 designed the Dylan’s Candy Bar locations at 1011 Third Avenue and in East Hampton, as well as the Robert Talbott New York showroom and the Reem Acra boutique on the Upper East Side. TRD

  • Renderings of the Limelight Marketplace

    The famous 1990s nightclub Limelight is getting a rebirth as a nifty retail experiment and it’s proving successful, with 75 percent of the available 60 shop spaces leased, according to the project’s marketing director. Established retailers that have already signed on are Caswell Massey, America’s oldest retailer (they made George Washington’s cologne), and Hunter Boots, the 150-year-old firm that supplies boots to England’s Royal Family. New York newcomers include Mari’s New York — Mari Tuttle was a chef at Balthazar’s, and this is her artisanal brownie business — It’s Sugar, a candy store created by Jeff Rubin, co-creator of Dylan’s Candy Bar, Carter & Cavero Old World Olive Oil, and Silly Souls, a baby goods store. They’re also negotiating to bring in four restaurants. Note: Correction appended. In February, retail developer Jack Menashe, creator of the successful chain store Bang Bang, leased the deconsecrated, early Victorian-age church and started renovations for what he calls “the next generation in retail.” Note: Correction appended.
