The Real Deal New York

  • The proposed cornerstone for the New York Freedom Tower, a 20-ton granite block intended to remain at ground zero to memorialize the 9/11 attacks, has found a permanent home several miles away — in Long Island. Although the block was dedicated at the ground zero site in 2004, it was returned to Innovative Stone, the Hauppaugue-based company that inscribed it, in 2006. While the stone was initially moved due to construction, it is unclear why the five-and-a-half-foot-tall monolith was not returned. Innovative Stone will oversee the stone’s rededication ceremony, which will take place this Friday on the eighth anniversary of the 9/11 attacks at a garden in Hauppaugue.
