The state Appellate Division okayed the city’s proposed Sanitation Department garage on Spring Street yesterday, crushing the hearts of many a celebrity Hudson Square resident. According to the Post, the court ruled unanimously in favor of the controversial project, a 120-foot-tall salt-storage shed on the West Side Highway, near the entrance to the Holland Tunnel. Residents of the pricey condominiums nearby — including stars like James Gandolfini, Jennifer Connelly, John Slattery, Kirsten Dunst and REM’s Michael Stipe — had filed several legal challenges to try to prevent the $400 million garage from getting off the ground. … [more]

  • Stephen Siegel, chairperson of CB Richard Ellis, has purchased a $1.75 million, two-bedroom apartment at the Fairchild, the 21-unit Tribeca condominium development at 55 Vestry Street, according to the Observer. The building, which has attracted the attention of various high-profile figures — including actor James Gandolfini, an investor, and actress Jessica Alba, who reportedly toured the building — is being marketed by Prudential Douglas Elliman. Siegel used Elliman broker Oren Alexander in the deal. Siegel told the Observer that he toured the apartment with a family member who “did an exhaustive search and knows about every finish and quality (or lack of it) at every apartment he looked at.” However, it was not immediately clear who would be residing in the home. Siegel told The Real Deal several years ago that he lived in a Park Avenue townhouse.

  • The developers of the Fairchild, at 415 Washington Street, did not
follow the Landmarks Preservation Commission-approved blueprint when
constructing the building, Downtown Express reported. The building’s
elevator bulkhead is higher than it should be, the windows are
casements and the cornice is not designed as planned. The building
switched architects midway through the project, with Joseph Pell
Lombardi designing the building and architect Karl Fischer taking over
once construction had begun. After approval from the Landmarks
Preservation Commission, Lombardi changed the designs to incorporate
recommendations from the Board of Standards and Appeals, and he never
went back to the commission for further approval, Fischer said.
Lombardi said Fischer should have gotten the necessary approvals. The
Fairchild is owned by a group of investors that includes actor James
    Gandolfini. … [more]

  • According to the Post, actress Jessica Alba checked out a few
penthouses in the Fairchild, a 21-unit condominium on Vestry Street in
Tribeca, which recently partnered with Robert DeNiro’s Greenwich Hotel to use its amenities. The homes Alba and her family looked at had price tags of between $6
million and $9 million, and came with private balconies, terraces and
river views. Model Adriana Lima and her husband also recently looked at
a few penthouses in the Fairchild, where actor James Gandolfini already
bought a unit. The building is expected to be completed by the end of
    the summer. … [more]
