  • Gardiners Bay Drive on Shelter Island

    What might have been a minor dispute over an unpaid bill has resulted in an extended legal battle and a lien against a multimillion dollar Shelter Island home, the Wall Street Journal reported.

    Hedge fund principal Melissa Ko and her husband, publisher S. Douglas Hahn, hired horticulturalist Matthew Daly in 2011 to build a driveway and landscape their yard. But not long ago, the couple went to court so they wouldn’t have to pay Daly because he doesn’t have a home improvement license, mandated by Suffolk County. [more]

    From the August issue: It’s been a rocky couple of years for the real estate market on Long Island’s East End. But now that the worst of the downturn has passed, the region’s major residential firms are seeing a slight increase in size compared to the last two years.

    This year, the 10 biggest brokerages in the Hamptons, Shelter Island and the North Fork collectively had a total of 1,230 agents — up 7 percent from 1,149 in 2011, according to The Real Deal’s annual ranking of the biggest East End firms. While that is not a huge jump, it is the second year that the agent headcount has gone up. In 2010, the 10 biggest firms had a total of 1,140 agents. [more]


  • Peter Stamberg and Paul Aferiat, partners of New York-based Stamberg-Aferiat Architecture, show off a Shelter Island home they designed for themselves last year on Plum TV (see video above). The exterior is colorful, oddly shaped, and probably unlike anything you’ve seen before. Stamberg and Aferiat say the multiwall polycarbonate gives great interior lighting, but the exterior is a mixed bag. “Half of the neighbors love the house,” Stamber said, “and half of the neighbors loathe the house.” But the architects designed the home for themselves, and hope it could be the basis for other similar projects in the future. … [more]
