Former New York City cop sentenced to 151 months for Boca timeshare fraud

Former New York City Police Detective Frank DeFilippo has been sentenced to 151 months for conspiring to commit mail fraud and wire fraud in a timeshare boiler room scheme, U.S. Attorney for the Southern District of Florida Wifredo Ferrer announced. According to a statement, DeFilippo organized a boiler room in which telemarketers negotiated to purchase timeshares owned by the victims if they paid an advanced fee to cover issues like title searches. The victims were then told that the fee would be refunded to them at closing along with the proceeds of the sales. The purchases never occurred, however, and more than 1,000 people were victimized, totaling $2.5 million. — Alexander Britell
