The Palm Beach Town Council is ordering the Brazilian Court hotel to remove nearly 1,000 square feet of artificial turf from its courtyard, after the hotel installed in product without their approval, the Palm Beach Post reported.

The hotel introduced the astro turf, after the lawn was being routinely destroyed during social gatherings, according to hotel owner Adam Schlesinger.

“We’ve used every type of sod and grass, but we have to tear it out every time,” Schlesinger said. “It’s important to make it look the best that we can.”

Technically the astro turf does not contribute to the town’s open space landscaping requirements, because it isn’t permeable, zoning administrator Paul Castro said

But under town law, the turf doesn’t count toward the town’s open space landscaping requirements because the artificial material isn’t permeable, Zoning Administrator Paul Castro said. Moreover, the 90-year-old hotel is landmarked and the Preservation Commission has voted 6-1 to not allow the turf to remain on the property. [Palm Beach Post]Christopher Cameron
