From the New York site: Architect Santiago Calatrava has been tapped to design the new Church of St. Nicholas planned for the Financial District, the New York Post reported.

The Greek Orthodox Archdiocese is developing the church at 130 Liberty Street as a replacement for the one destroyed on 9/11. It will sit just south of the site of the World Trade Center Transportation Hub that the architect also designed. The Port Authority project is nearly $2 billion over budget and running years behind, the Post said.

The hiring of Calatrava depends on a contractual agreement that has not yet been signed. The archdiocese’s Father Mark Arey said in May that Calatrava was among roughly a dozen architects who were pre-selected to offer designs. [NYP, 2nd item]Mark Maurer
