A new City Hall and police department headquarters in Miami Gardens were expected to open last year, but a series of delays have pushed it back.

The city has gone over budget on the project at 187th Street and Northwest 27th Avenue by $7 million due to risk insurance for the builder and forensic testing. Miami Gardens had received a $55 million bond and broke ground on the municipal complex in summer of 2012. A threshold inspector, however, spotted cracks in some support beams when erecting a parking garage on the site. This led to a “stop work order” on the construction so the beams could be fixed.

Swedish construction firm Skanska projects that City Hall will open next month and the police station will follow three months later.

“There were some concerns with the construction drawings and how it was being erected,” City Manager Cameron Benson told the Miami Herald. “Everyone’s trying to make sure that things are done correctly.” [Miami Herald]Mark Maurer
