Miami-Dade County has received approval from state officials to take control of the historic Coconut Grove Playhouse.

Shortly before Wednesday’s deadline, county officials provided the state’s Department of Environmental Protection with proof that it satisfied a large group of playhouse creditors and cleaned up the property’s title, the Miami Herald reported. If the county missed the deadline, the state would have put the property up for sale.

Now the county can proceed with a plan to reconstruct the playhouse building, which was completed in 1926 and is considered an architectural and cultural landmark. The playhouse already has $20 million in bond revenue set aside for the project. Florida International University and GableStage plan to form a partnership to operate the playhouse as a working and educational theater. [Miami Herald]Eric Kalis
