A Palm Beach County company is hoping its shippable manufactured homes gain traction with developing countries – and even high-end homebuyers in isolated areas.

Mesocore of Riviera Beach designed 1,000-square-foot homes that can be shipped in 20-foot long containers, the Palm Beach Post reported. Company CEO Joe Esposito, an architect, says the concept is similar to the mail order Sears homes that used to be transported by rail and constructed on site. The homes are designed to provide their own electricity through solar panels and rainwater traps.

“I’ve always been intrigued by the possibility of manufacturing this kind of house in a factory,” Esposito told the Post. “This is like a Lego set. Someone who can lift 60 pounds of weight can build this house.”

The homes are priced at about $80,000, with another $2,000-to-$4,000 in shipping fees. [Palm Beach Post]Eric Kalis
