Palm Beach property taxes highest in state

Palm Beach County homeowners have the most expensive property tax bills in Florida, but they still enjoy a deep discount from what many New Yorkers pay.

With an average 2012 property tax bill of $4,949, Palm Beach County topped Seattle-based Zillow’s statewide rankings released last week, the Palm Beach Post reported. The county ranked 81st on the national list, however. Miami-Dade County came in fifth for Florida counties, with a $4,672 average tax bill.

Four of the top five most expensive average property tax bills in the nation were in New York. Westchester, N.Y. topped the national list with an average tax bill of $14,829.

“I guess we should be thankful that our taxes are not higher, everyone can probably agree on that,” economist William Stronge told the Post. “But thankful and taxes are two words not usually used together.” [Palm Beach Post]Eric Kalis
