The same Miami Beach waters millions of Floridians and tourists flock to each year could soon become a menace if sea level rise predictions come to fruition.

A special task force commissioned by Miami-Dade County projects the Southeast Florida region will experience a three- to seven-inch sea level rise by 2030, with those numbers nearly tripling by 2060. Miami-Dade County in particular should anticipate a 3-foot rise in sea levels by 2100.

Whereas previous analysis focused on reducing greenhouse gas emissions, the report prepared by the Miami-Dade Sea Level Rise Task Force took a more aggressive approach, with recommendations for mitigation and adaptation to impeding rises. These suggestions included plans to protect vulnerable public infrastructure and repurpose areas that will be impacted by flooding.

The county commissioners will be presented with the report at their Tuesday meeting. [Daily Business Review]Mark Maurer
