Architect Frank Gehry appeared on CNN’s Fareed Zakaria GPS this past Sunday (video unavailable) and spoke about his design process. When Zakaria suggested that a crumpled piece of paper provided the motivation for the folds typical of Gehry buildings, and especially his design of Disney Hall in L.A., Gehry said it was a myth perpetuated by a cameo in “The Simpsons.” “That was just a fun — fun thing, but it has — it has haunted me,” Gehry said. “People do — who’ve seen ‘The Simpsons’ — believe it.” (For our Spanish speaking readers, a dubbed clip of the episode in question can be seen here.)
Located at 500 17th St. in Florida, the 100,641 square feet New World Center in Miami Beach, which opened earlier this year, was Gehry’s first project in Florida. [CNN] [more]

The Real Deal’s Publisher Amir Korangy appeared on CNN’s “In the Arena” last night to discuss Donald Trump’s personal finances alongside show host Eliot Spitzer and Floyd Norris of the New York Times. Korangy says in the segment (see a portion of it above) that although Trump’s casinos were entering bankruptcy for a third time, the developer is “a master at restructuring” and noted that he’s eliminated $1.2 billion of debts in previous restructures. Korangy estimates Trump’s worth to be $2 billion.

Robert Shiller isn’t sure that the economic recovery is anything more than a “spontaneous recovery of confidence,” he said in a CNN interview with Fareed Zakaria yesterday. The Yale professor and economist behind the Case-Shiller Index said the government’s stimulus may not have been large enough on its own to fuel the increase in housing prices that we’re seeing. He said he doesn’t know exactly what the source of this recovery is, but that it could be renewed confidence in the government’s ability to react at all, rather than the government’s actual actions. He added that the disparity between rich and poor Americans is not sustainable without creating a “winner-take-all” economic system that will inevitably result in resentment and hostility. [more]

The first-time homebuyer tax credit may have been a little too popular, with many Americans so eager to take advantage of the incentive that they gamed the system. Almost $4 million in tax credits were granted to children as young as four years old, according to a CNN report. Some parents, it seems, applied for the first-time credit in their children’s names in attempts to work around the government’s income limits, which are $75,000 for single taxpayers or $150,000 for married taxpayers filing a joint return. Internal Revenue Service employees were among those who claimed credit they weren’t actually eligible for, the report said.

CNN’s Gerri Willis and John Simons, senior personal finance editor at Black Enterprise Magazine, answer a question about mortgage deferment from a homeowner. The Arizona homeowner, who lost his job in January, owes $650,000 on a home that is now worth $258,000. Simons said the homeowner is probably eligible for some of the federal government’s current mortgage modification programs for loans underwritten by Fannie Mae or Freddie Mac. [more] -
Home stagers Brad Fletcher and Jeff Johnson started Home Staging Design Pros in 2005, and the two told CNN that business is up more than 200 percent compared to last year. The company offers consultations for sellers and full home staging. Johnson and Fletcher say they approach homes with a different perspective from the sellers. “We don’t have emotional attachments to the house, we want to sell the house, it’s a commodity for us,” Johnson said.
