  • Chinese drywall not radioactive

    It may smell terrible and corrode metal fixtures, but Floridians and
    other homeowners whose houses have tainted Chinese drywall don’t have
    to worry about setting off Geiger counters. State and federal officials
    tested panels for phosphogypsum, or calcium sulfate, and the U.S.
    Environmental Protection Agency and the Florida Department of Health
    said radioactive levels were no higher than what ordinarily would be
    found in the natural environment. There are still about 1,100
    complaints under investigation. [more]

  • The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency said a developer must remove
    the asbestos-contaminated exterior stucco from the 30-story tower at
    1515 S. Flagler Drive in West Palm Beach before it demolishes the
    building. Trinity Development Group, which wants to build a $150
    million luxury tower called the Modern in the tower’s place, contested
    earlier recommendations regarding the asbestos, saying there was not
    enough asbestos to prevent a simple demolition. [more]
