Brompton Condominium
The Brompton is a 22-story, 168-unit residential condominium building on the Upper East Side.Related Companies, the developer and landlord, erected the high-rise, located at 205 East 85th Street, between Second and Third Avenues, in 2009. Units in the building were at issue in a number of legal battles between the developer and buyers, who agreed to buy before the 2008 collapse of the global financial markets and ensuing dip in New York City property prices. Robert A.M. Stern designed the 325,000-square-foot tower with a red brick and limestone faade vague reminiscent of Gothic architecture, which contains two landscaped courtyards. The building contains a mix of apartments and townhouse units. Some apartments have fireplaces and Juliet balconies. The duplex townhouses have elevators. All residences have washers, dryers, and walk-in closets. Several mid-rise tenement buildings previously occupied the site. Henry Sturman, a real estate investors, owned the site until his death in 1973. In 1998, after Sturmans heirs went bankrupt, Philip Pilevsky of Philips International acquired the buildings. Pilevsky sold the site to Related Companies in 2002. Pilevsky is the owner of the 14,000-square-foot retail condominium in the Brompton, the new building on the site. An Equinox gym, available to residents, and a Gap store, occupy the retail space at the base of the building. Amenities include a doorman and concierge service, the Equinox gym, a lounge, a garden, and a childrens playroom with an adjacent outdoor playground. The Brompton takes advantage of an inclusionary housing bonus by providing some affordable housing units off-site within the boundaries of Community Board 8. -MK
