Starrett-Lehigh Building
The Starrett-Lehigh Building at 601 West 26th Street is notable for two things: its sheer size and its most recent price tag. The 19-story, 2.3 million-square-foot building was constructed in 1930 and 1930 as a joint venture between the Lehigh Valley Railroad and the Starrett Corporation, a real estate investment firm. As such, it was built bigbig enough so that trains could roll into its ground floor, with plenty of room leftover for office and factory space above and around. Trains, of course, no longer roll into the building. But its design left it capaciously desirable, especially as West Chelsea gentrified around it. Such desirability meant that the Starrett-Lehigh Building fetched a $920 million price when it last traded in the summer of 2011. RXR Realty, a privately held real estate investment firm, partnered with a Canadian pension firm on the buy. Following its purchase, RXR set about a $50 million effort at upgrading the mechanics and the interiors of the building. Tenants include clothier Tommy Hilfiger, security firm Security Industry Specialists and advertising firm McGarryBowen. ¾ -TA
