Brooklyn inmates move to detention house

November 17, 2008 05:37PM

Prisoners are being transferred to the Brooklyn House of Detention because renovations of a Brooklyn courthouse are scheduled to begin in January, and the 120-bed prisoner holding facility at the courthouse has to close. The Brooklyn House of Detention was closed in 2003 after the inmate population fell. The city also has a $450 million long-term plan to expand the Brooklyn House of Detention as part of a larger effort by the Department of Correction to shift inmates out of dilapidated buildings on Rikers Island to jails closer to the borough courthouses.
