City Council candidates don't support AY project

Bill de Blasio (left) and David YasskyThe blog Noticing New York looks at the professed views on development, and specifically on the Atlantic Yards project, of all 15 candidates running for City Council in the 33rd and 39th districts, including current office holders. All of the candidates oppose the project, to some degree or another, the blog says. In the 33rd district, current City Council member David Yassky has said he never supported the Atlantic Yards project, and that he doesn't think the proposed plan will be built because there isn't funding for it. The 39th district's Council member, Bill de Blasio, said he became a supporter of the project because it promised affordable housing, jobs and community benefits, but said no further public subsidies should be granted until there is evidence that the Community Benefits Agreement will be adhered to. De Blasio said he can't support an arena-only plan for the site, and called for a moratorium on demolition until there is a written plan on what will be built.

Yassky was one who held the real estate industry hostage by requiring 30% "affordable" housing on waterfront Williamsburg - even though the market is unproven, developers took all the risks, no subsidies from City so same costs, no one had invested any money in this area in a century, and of course, the world tanked. Another brilliant politician

The irony in all of this is that if DDDB didn't put up this fight all of the for sale/rent space would be coming to market in the next 6 months or so and Ratner would have been screwed. Instead he'll come to market in 3 years from now and the place will be a huge success.

RE Williamsburg waterfront Yassky did what the neighborhood wanted and by no means is this the reason for somemany unsold units. Its the economy, look around there are unsold condos all over NYC and the country. Now as far as Mr Yassky's sincerity is concerned, he blows with the wind. Or should I say....what will get him votes. He has been a complete disappointment. Maybe he can join Mr Fisher and sell his constitutes down the river to the highest bidder.

This is why property rights should be absolute. Politicians in this city have NEVER made the right decision regarding property rights abridgements. Anyone with a brain that tours this city realizes everything great about was built when a man could build whatever the hell he wanted on his land. Now, we have idiots who pander to the residents of housing projects and other deadbeats who live off the public dime. You mean these people don't know how to run a city? Or even how the hell or why a building gets built? No kidding!

Don't believe a word they say. They are only saying this crap to get votes. I hope they do build the Atlantic Yards in it's entirety and they way Frank Ghery envisions it.
