New York City-based discount department store Conway Stores has taken 18,000 square feet at the Related Companies Gateway Center at Bronx Terminal Market, located near the new Yankee Stadium, bringing the approximately 1 million-square-foot mall to 90 percent occupancy.

Abe Cohen, president of Conway, and Adam Goldschmidt, Conway's in-house director of leasing, represented Conway in the deal. Peter Ripka of Ripco Real Estate brokered the deal on behalf of Related.

So far, two stores have opened at the mall -- Home Depot, on April 23, and Staples, on June 6 -- with the next tenant, Target, scheduled to open July 26. Restaurant chain Applebee's projects an opening of its location at the mall at the end of August.

The majority of the remainder of the mall's tenants are expected to open up by September, including Best Buy, BJ's Wholesale Club, Bed Bath & Beyond, Toys "R" Us, Babies "R" Us, Payless ShoeSource, AT&T, Marshalls and GNC.

Related faced community opposition to the $500 million development, including accusations that the new big-box stores would steal business from local retailers, and displace others. The developer settled a suit for an undisclosed amount of money with the roughly two dozen stores that were forced to move. It has also promised to hire locally, a commitment which has been honored so far by Home Depot's bringing onboard Bronx residents to make up 75 percent of its 200 employees.

Meanwhile, the developer will go before Community Board 7 tonight to discuss its plans for a $323 million, 588,000-square-foot shopping center at the Bronx's Kingsbridge Armory, at 29 West Kingsbridge Road, the Observer reported. Related is expected to face demands from community groups and labor unions for a minimum wage requirement in stores at that project.

It was long overdue. The area has had no real retail for years. It should attract consumers from all parts of the Bronx, as well as the upper Manhattan area (145th and above).

This project should be as big a draw as Related's project on the Belt Parkway. Can't wait for all the stores to open. It's nice to see a local player like Conway be a part of it.

I wish the the entire mall was open to the summer customers it would be a big pick me up as people tend to shop in the summer and eat out when the weather is hot. Anyway good luck to all the retailers, and happy shopping to the eager shoppers.I am happy about the mall in the area.

So excited! Finally a BJ’s in the Bronx! Love that we have a Target closer to home and Toys r us, Home Depot and Best Buy are pluses! Did not know about the Applebees! Very exciting! Can’t wait! Gonna go check Target out tomorrow! Please add an IKEA!

I hope they change the parking charges when the other stores open. Shopping and eating out becomes expensive at $2.40 per hour. It ends up cheaper to go uptown to Home Depot to pick up a few things. That's the only draw back. Love the idea of a new mall in the area.

pay for parking!!??!??!! That's just plain greedy. I havent been there yet, and don't plan on it. I go uptown or Yonkers where i dont have to pay for parking. Who ever heard of paying to park at a mall?!?!? Especially in this economy you figure they would be valet parking for free to get people into the stores. Just palin dumb.

i went to target and parked out on the street because you have to pay for the parking, i think we shouldn't have to pay for parking times are hard now.

I heard from my friend that they are accepting the EBT cards. She literally had to wait over 45 mins. at BJ's because of all of the EBT card holders. I am not offending anyone, just that they should make a seperate line for them. I also hope people maintain this mall properly and not mess it up with misconducts.

Hey! I was the EBT commentor. It was organized and I lasted about 10 mins. in the line. I guess my friend exxagerated, but I believe the prices are way higher than the BJ's in Jersey. I guess they taking advantage: 1-Yankee Stadium, 2-Closest one to the community, 3-the city....I see myself going again, but for things I need for the moment.

I love the Mall. I am so excited to have a decent shopping area walking distance from home. I love Target! My Favorite. We could use an Old Navy - That would be great.

Gateway center could be better!..needs more security! Parking should be free like most malls in usa..better housekeeping inside/outside the stores..parents...Target...BJs...Marshalls are not playgrounds...these are stores...watch your children before someone else get annoyed with them wrecking the stores since the stores does not enforce behaved children..elevator entry smells like urine..OMG! not on a very hot day...needs shuttle from 145th

I could just imagine the inventory shrink these companies are having at these locations. They should triple the security there. I wonder what the actual demographics are for 5 sq miles, 75-90% Public Assistance Recipients probably. Look at the way parents let their kids run around, what are they waiting for them to get hurt so they can sue? You know EVERY company there would just settle and give them 5-10k to walk away. Why is it that in economic distress areas there are always so many unwed mothers with 2-5 kids in tow? GOOD LUCK to every store there and Good Luck to the poor staff there. Well except for the ones that are robbing thier place of employment

To commenter #22: You obviously do not live in this area. I pity you and your view of the world. I just moved from the South shore of Staten Island to here. The demographic where I lived was wealthier, yet the children did not behave as well. The Bronx is changing for the better. The people here are hard-working and not all of them are on public assistance. Please do not share ignorant comments and please grow up.

this is great for Harlem and lower Washington heights too! We get killed on prices just because we have a Manhattan address. Now if the MTA would get a better bus route to get there. I walked there from 158th st. Its hard to get to, but if you stay on the right side while crossing the Macomb's bridge, there is a pedestrian ramp that goes down there thats quicker, but I doubt i would take it at night. Its very desolate.

I haven't been there as of yet and I didn't even know about it until I rode home in a cab one night and passed by. I'm going there today and very excited... The Bronx needed some kind of attraction besides the stadium :).

Not for Nothing but this is why Mayor Bloomberg, maybe should not have been voted back in office!!!!!!! " Actually PAYING to park at a Mall " come on are you serious... Don't your Robb us ENOUGH!!!!??? Parking should be FREE FREE FREE FREE FREE FREE.... In if not I guess you'll soon find out it needs to be once you start losing customers!!! See what the City runners/owners have to realize, is nothing that is that great of an idea last for long without accomodating the Actual Community/Consumers.... Let's fix this Problem in keep the Bronx Growing to where it needs to be!!! "Best idea yet"
