Cooper Square on the Bowery, is opening tomorrow, as the city's tourism
industry is hurting. According to hotel tracking firm PKF Consulting,
the average room rate in Manhattan fell 3 percent in October to $357 a
night, and the occupancy rate declined 8 percent over the same period
last year. Klaus Ortlieb, the co-owner of the Cooper Square Hotel,
plans to draw people to the 21-story, 145-room property with a $275
room rate, which he hopes to raise by $100 in a few months.
