Group pushes for Willets Point affordable housing
June 20, 2007 12:00AM
Queens community activists met last night in the first of a series of public forums to draft a community response to the Bloomberg administration's proposed redevelopment of Willets Point. The activists, united under the banner of the Queens for Affordable Housing Coalition, are focusing on affordable housing, infrastructure, development and land-use process issues at their meetings. According to meeting organizers, this is the first step in a series of summer meetings the group will hold in Corona, Jackson Heights and Flushing in an attempt to build community consensus for Willets Point plans before the city's land-use approval process starts up in the fall. The coalition wants to press the Bloomberg administration and the Economic Development Corporation to include a sizeable chunk of affordable housing in the plan for Willets Point. more By John Celock
