Jersey shore discounts pull customers from Hamptons

July 24, 2009 12:00PM

From the July issue: The cheaper alternative to summering in the Hamptons is becoming even more economical. The credit crunch has slashed prices on the Jersey Shore, offering buyers and renters — some of whom are deserting the Hamptons — the best deals in years. Significant price drops can be found up and down the northern and central Jersey coast — not only in shore towns such as Asbury Park, which saw a building blitz when the economy was peaking after a period of struggle, but also in wealthy enclaves that until recently were widely considered bulletproof. Though few properties are trading in desirable beach towns such as Bay Head and Mantoloking — both known for their shingle-style homes reminiscent of Nantucket — and Spring Lake, which boasts block after block of Victorian-era mansions with wrap-around porches — brokers say a smattering of deals illustrate that there are opportunities to be had.

i love both the shore and hamptons, but they are really entirely different scenes...cant say one is better, but personally I would always prefer to buy property in the hamptons...it just think it's the obvious choice. hamptons will always be the hamptons and jersey wil always be jersey.

I heard some Jersey shore properties can be bought really cheap. The only catch is you have to pay all cash and give a 10% donation to a Yeshiva.

Deserting the Hamptons? My ____. This is again a unknowledgabe reporter trying to grab headlines. Nobody is deserting the prettiest area of Long Island. I have been to the Jersey Shore and there is really no comparison. The Jersey Shore is mainly shore with a bunch of condos/big houses stuck on pavement. The Hamptons are trees, flowers, grass, nature etc. It is two different animals.

I love parts of the Hamptons and I love parts of the Jersey shore. Asbury Park hasn't been nice since the 80s. Spring Lake & LBI are just two of the nicest parts of the Jersey shore. Hampton Bays is filled with meatheads wearing Affliction & Ed Hardy. We should nuke that place STAT!

Are you people kidding? The "Hamptons" doesn't hold a candle to the Jersey shore, dollar for dollar, unless you're an overpaying idiot, seeking status. Get over it- find a great place for your kids to play in the summer.

The "Hamptons" does not exsist. The "Hamptons" is a term made up by gossip columinst and reporters. The Hamptons are a beautiful wonderland full of nature, peace, quiet, beautiful houses, sophisticated people, charitable people, talented people, hardworking regular people, salt of the earth people.

You are right number 5, the Hamptons does not hold a candle to the jersey shore if you are looking to trip out on trance music and spend the day with a bunch of goones. enough!!!! No comparison- Jersey is the work

Hampton's is the most beautiful place on Long Island. So what, that's like eating the best piece of dog crap. In the same amount of time it takes to get to the Hamptons, you could fly to a tropical island that is surely more beautiful.

#6, isn't Bernies place going to be on the block, along with a few other criminals who just lost their houses? Maybe salt of the earth will return someday, but for now, the Hamptons is hardly a "salt of the earth" community- get real.
