Locals say reopening jail will hurt neighborhood

Brooklyn House of Detention
Local elected officials and residents scheduled a protest this morning in response to prisoners being moved into the Brooklyn House of Detention. Critics say having an active jail in the neighborhood will impede efforts to upgrade the area and will discourage development. The jail has been closed since 2003, but the city Department of Correction is planning to reopen the facility and double its capacity. The jail can currenlty hold 759 prisoners.

HOD existed just fine in years past. As a neighbor it is non-issue and I don't know why Yassky and Simon have such a knee-jerk reaction (publicity hounds?). Only nuisance with the prison is the guards with their parking permits -parking wherever they feel like it and as long as they feel like it.

In years past, nearly every storefront was a bailbondsman or lawyer's office. now you've got new rental and condos going up within feet of this POS building and some decent shops and restaurants that took people's life savings to create. Yassky is responding to his constituency which aint' brother Jim behind bars

I think they should condo out the cells. In this market I'm sure the indictments are going to be profound. Might as well get a head start.
