Lower Manhattan
Lower Manhattan was named one of America's most walkable neighborhoods
by Walk Score, a Web site targeting potential homebuyers and renters,
that ranks neighborhoods based on friendliness to pedestrians. The
neighborhood earned a "walk score" of 99, awarding it the designation
of "walker's paradise." The Downtown Alliance credits Lower Manhattan
with easy subway access, a free bike-sharing program and a "car-light
lifestyle," leading to an eco-friendly neighborhood, including nearly
16 million square feet of LEED-certified space. New York City was
ranked nationwide as the second most walkable city with a score of 86
out of 100, behind San Francisco. The Web site analyzed 2,508
neighborhoods in the 40 most populous U.S. cities. TRD
