Stringer calls for Second Avenue Subway delay investigation

Manhattan Borough President Scott Stringer

In response to the Metropolitan Transportation Authority's projected delays of up to five more years on construction of the Second Avenue Subway, Manhattan Borough President Scott Stringer has demanded an investigation of the entire project. In a letter sent Sept. 22 to the MTA, Stringer requested investigation into three specific sources of delay: real estate acquisition costs, repackaged contracts and relocation of utilities. Since the project's inception two years ago, 13 businesses along Second Avenue have shuttered and cost overruns have amounted to over $1.9 billion. Originally, completion for the subway was set for 2012 with an estimated cost of $3.8 billion. Since then, the MTA has pushed back the completion date to 2016 or 2017 with a cost between $4.4 billion and $4.8 billion. TRD

This is all the fault of rent-stabilized tenants, or at least it should be.
