MoMa tower opponents may lodge legal complaint

After yesterday's announcement that the City Council had approved the construction of the Jean Nouvel-designed MoMa tower at 53 West 53rd Street, the opposition has pledged to continue its fight to stop the building from making its Midtown debut. "Nobody is against fine architecture," Justin Peyser, a nearby resident and member of the Coalition for Responsible Midtown Development, told the New York Post. "The problem is where it's being built." The coalition, which is staunchly against the tower, will likely wage a legal challenge against the building, according to Peyser. Council member Dan Garodnick, whose district begins just north of the proposed tower site, said that the main gripe among his constituents is that the tower is too tall for the neighborhood. [Post]

What an idiot! Too Tall! In Midtown Manhattan! Really! This is NIMBY at its absolute worst. If it were in my power I would give this project a bonus 10 floors just to see Justin Peyser's head explode! He needs to get out of our city if it offends him so. Build it to full height!

"The problem is where it's being built." How this person thinks he is entitled to a perpetual view of a vacant lot is beyond me.

Do either of you live in the area? If not, shut up. He has every right to protest this building. MOMA does not need to be dwarfed by another giant tower. PLUS, this is just another gift for the rich...expensive hotel, ultra-expensive condos...and a bone for MOMA. ENOUGH mega buildings. One will not be able to see the sun walking on the sidewalks of NYC if this keeps up. "entitled to a perpetual view of a vacant lot"...what are you talking about? No one said not to build anything...just not to build a building too large for the area. Do not put words in other's mouths. YES, build...a smaller building. Easy! 1000 ft is just TOO TALL!!!!

#3 is probably that whiny NIMBY moron Peyser. No I don't live down the block, but if I did I would be all for this tower. I feel it is totally appropriate to have a very tall building in midtown Manhattan where, incidentally, relatively few people actually live. Anyone living in midtown accepts by default that there are tall towers there and that more will eventually come. Peyser should just get his NIMBY wimpy whiny ass out to bucolic Inwood if he thinks everything is "Too Tall". In my opinion, this building isn't tall enough.

I am sick of hearing about all these bleeding heart, liberal cry baby so called public action groups who want to make it difficult for development (i.e. progress) to occur. What all these groups fail to see is that they are hurting the city far more than they are helping it. Without development Manhattan's iconic world status would be no better off than when the Dutch first settled the island. One thing is for certain, development and progress is not nearly as difficult in other iconic cities around the world. If you don't want to live in an iconic world class city with tall buildings, then move to Long Island.

It is not a liberal bleeding heart position! I am a total libersl and I totally support this building at the full height! The opposition are just the worst kind of selfish NIMBY cretins whose only reason for opposition is that "It's too tall!" Utter nonsense when you're right smack in the middle of Manhattan for god sake. I'd call the oppoistion republicans before they are just obstructionists with no real ideas of their own.
