New gym at Stuy Town/Cooper Village

A new 5,700 square-foot fitness center has opened for residents of Stuyvesant Town and Peter Cooper Village. The fitness center is part of a makeover that had been promised by owner Tishman Speyer, which in 2006 bought the massive East Side property from MetLife for a record $5.4 billion. The gym at 520 East 20th Street, replaced a D'agostino supermarket, was built in just six weeks by Aragon Construction and S.M. Berger Architecture P.C. TRD

The rendering in your article is much nicer than the actual facility. Plus, the gym charges more that New York Sports and other local gyms. It is very dissapointing.

I guess the plus about this gym is that its in Cooper Village, rather than many avenues away, so they can charge what they please for membership. Though I think all gyms should be free and included in our local taxes. The same for education and health.

You all really need to catch up. The gym opened on Jan 3rd. As a previous NYSC member for 6 years, I changed to Oval Fitness, as it is called, because it is LESS EXPENSIVE (and closer to home). No, I don't like the "full 1-year membership" but since I got in w/o initiation and visit at least twice a week, that's OK by me. Nothing different from Equinox nor NY Sports. Sure, in the true spirit of "luxury buildings" they would have included it in the rent, but .... ST and PCV are far from true luxury and ... they're suffering. Recent insiders know that a) rents are being lowered and free months (plural!) are being offered in the Rental Office and b) hundreds, yes HUNDREDS of apartments sit vacant right now; thus the return of the $1000 Amex Gift Card for referrals. Maybe those huge rent hikes aren't so great after all.

Tiny gym, the studios are extremely small... a very functional gym, unfortunately they didn't even bother to put a sauna or steamroom in. It's definitely lacking warmth and an inviting atmosphere. Great classes, though!

Small compact gym. Everything you need including a friendly staff BUT where are all the cable channels we were promised when we joined a year ago? Come on, for $80 bucks a month.. you need to include the YES network!
