New Yorkers say Plaza has lost its soul

The Plaza
Some New Yorkers believe developer Elad Properties is exploiting and cheapening the Plaza name in trying to make it a global brand. "They're taking the brand and trying to maximize it with no taste level," said Margaret Ternes, executive director of the Fund for Park Avenue. Elad plans to open Plaza hotels in Las Vegas, San Francisco, Tokyo and other locations around the world. Some Plaza penthouse buyers are suing Elad for not delivering the lavish apartments they were promised, and Elad is suing TPG Architecture for shoddy workmanship on the Plaza's retail space renovation. Steven Gaines, author of "The Sky's the Limit: Passion and Property in Manhattan," said, "the hotel is a landmark, physically and spiritually. What's next, Plaza dog food? It's an exploitation of the revered name."

ELAD bought the Plaza for an insane amount of money. Of course theyre going to try to make money off the name. Its their right, they own the brand, theyre entitled to do with the brand as they see fit. If you dont like it move to Cuba.

I think the Fed is bailing out The Plaza because the Plaza is integral to New York Society.

Agreed...garish, no taste interior, OUTRAGEOUS pricing for Palm Court Tea, horrible, no class decoration...anyone who would pay for condos with tiny windows is indeed insane. $1000 for hotel rooms with a view of 58th street? I hope they lose their shirts on destroying a part of NYC!!!!!

@#6: Why do you hope they lose their shirts? They haven't done anything to the outside of the existing building, only to make it more brighter and the inside, by many standards is much superior to what it was before.

I totally agree. The Plaza has lost its soul. Just ask the doormen. They'll tell you want the Plaza used to be. Now it's just overly priced condos which they are enough of those here alrealdy -so nothing special!
