Thrift store opening its first NYC shop in Kingsbridge

May 14, 2008 02:53PM
Kingsbridge, Bronx

New York City's first branch of the second-hand shop Unique Thrift Store will open in the Kingsbridge section of the Bronx in late June.

The store will occupy 218 West 234th Street at Broadway, which formerly housed an Annie Sez clothing retailer.

Unique Thrift Stores specialize in gently used men's, women's and children's clothing, as well as home décor items, toys, books, music and knick knacks.

The family-owned company has 17 stores in Illinois, Indiana and Ohio, but it recently made inroads in New Jersey, and company president Dave Kloeber said Kingsbridge, with neighboring Riverdale nearby, was the right place to break into New York City.

"We've been very, very well received coming up through New Jersey," said Kloeber, who added the Kingsbridge store would "the first one of many."

This chain of Thrift shops are poorly managed by inexperienced personnel. The three recent locations in NJ (South Plainfield,Watchung & Elizabeth) are locations in which thrift stores could actually thrive. The quality of the goods sold is lacking and the employees are not the best of the crop. They tend to hire non-English speaking employees who cannot effectively communicate with all types of customers. The actual assistant managers are required to work 18-20 hour shifts, while the actual store managers selectively arrange ethical working schedules. I would not recommend this retail chain for either the consumer or a prospective employee.

We have gotten some fabulous bargains at the South Plainfield NJ store. . .lawn furniture, a dobro, costume jewelry, designer purse, to name a few items. There are occasionally discount days when the price is even more of a bargain. Some of the clothing still has the original tags so it is basically unused clothing at thrift prices. You can shop carefully here and still come out a winner. Worth the try!

This place is horrible to go shopping at. The employees are so nice but the managment is riduculous from what workers have said. They will fire you before they have to pay any benefits.

they tell people that they are benifiting a charity. They told one person I know it was the lupus foundation. Now that's a lie! I have no problem with it being for profit. Jut be honest!

I guess you dont donate some of the proceeds to the lupus foundation. What a disappointment. From now on I'll donate to the Salvation Army stores, at least some people will get a break.

These stores pay charities for their merchandise (which was donated by people for free) then resell it for a profit. So yes it is true that they benefit charities and they are a for-profit company.

I have gotten very lucky with good buys at this thrift store. The staff are very nice. The layout is good and organized. I have gone to thrift stores that donate to a special cause but the economy now is so poor that we all are "A GOOD CAUSE". I will go again, thanks for the bargains.

Happy shopper

I've shopped a lot of there stores and I have found great bargains. I heard they don't let the employees shop so the public has a chance at the good merchandise. Thanks for being in my neighborhood!!!:)

It's a good thing that entrepreneurs like Dave Kloeber still exist today. Leaders like this enjoy opportunities to not only create jobs in a time when job opportunities are hard to find, but to offer great values at affordable prices. Thanks for stimulating the economy in your new locations, you are one of the few that is trying to make a difference.

My husband and I deliver donations to this new store in Kingsbridge - people in our building throw away so many useful and clean items from clothes to small furniture. I feel like I donate and save the environment at the same time. It is very organized, clean and friendly. God Bless us ALL.

Its a great store......Im addicted......brand names, many new, for a fraction of the price.....but dont expect great customer service. I can grit my teeth and take it though....brand new Easy Spirits for $6.99? Yeah, I can stand some bad customer service!

Prices may be cheap, but these people are as nasty as they come. If you want to thrift and have a good time at the same time, go somewhere else. NYC is full of shops like this one with much better people.

I HEARD THEY HIRED IMMIGRANTS AND PAY THEM $40 FOR THE WHOLE DAY! IT IS A SHAME TO TAKE ADVANTAGE OF THESE POOR PEOPLE. THEY HAVE VERY FEW PEOPLE WITH A LEGAL STATUS WORKING THERE. THAT IS WHY THEY DON'T PAY BENEFITS. WHAT A FOR PROFIT COMPANY!

Reading these comments was very helpful. Now I know why they didn't call me for an interview - sounds like they want only cheap labor.
