Union protests One Hanson Place with Web site

One Hanson Place

The building service workers union launched a Web site to protest former NBA basketball star Magic Johnson's use of non-union workers at One Hanson Place, a Brooklyn condominium owned by his investment company. The Web site, NoMagicHealthCare.org, calls attention to the workers, who receive individual health care, but have to pay extra for family members' coverage, which union workers receive as part of their contract. Johnson's company, Canyon-Johnson Urban Fund, partnered with the Dermot Company to convert the former Williamsburgh Savings Bank into luxury condos. [Crain's]

Well someone who wanted quality would use Union work, someone who believed that a social contract binds labor and management tying profits for employers to profits to workers, someone who belives in overtime and weekends and all the benefits enjoyed by previous poster

Unions can be a pain in the ass. However, they can make managing a labor force much more efficient. It's usually poorly managed and performing companies that have problems with unions, while good companies probably have a symbiotic relationship. That's not to say that many union in NYC aren't completely corrupt.

they are extremely corrupt, and as any developer knows that it costs more to build with union labor, there is no reason why an employee should share profits with his/her employer, also union work is not better quality is not in any way better

Doesn't help that the developers are more corrupt than the unions.

#6, I'd hate to have your job. I work under an incentive plan that allows me to earn more when I earn a profit for my employer. I think most industries function that way. Employees' work generates profits. If you own a firm, you must have unhappy employees.

Hey you, don't work too fast, you want to spoil it for all us other union workers?.....we have another break in 15 minutes so slow down.....this is an 8 week union job (even though I know it can be done in 5 weeks) so relax.........You can't change that bulb, you're not in the right local.....UNIONS WERE STARTED FOR THE RIGHT REASONS BUT WE HAVE SO MANY THINGS THAT NEED CHANGE AND TO BROUGHT INTO THE 21ST CENTURY........The Watch Dog is watching...........

i worked at 1 hanson place for a year. i am a union stonemason. when developers are in a rush to complete a project so they can start earning there own profit, they want to cut corners so its cheaper for them. most people think its the labor that cuts corners. the labor goes by whatever the architect on the job says. also when you start demoing an old building, you are opening a can of worms, you run into problems you dont expect.
