Red Hook port to remain open

Sources say the city has reversed on plans to close Red Hook’s container port because the waterfront area’s $56 million cruise ship terminal has failed to become anything resembling an economic powerhouse. The EDC estimated that the terminal would employ 370 people; after being open a year, however, it only employs 14 full-time workers. The city wanted to expand the cruise ship terminal–in addition to introducing a number of other uses to the area, including housing and a beer garden–by shuttering the container port. more [NYDN]
