Survey: NYC’s beaches sub-standard

New Yorkers for Parks conducted an independent review of seven beaches run by the city and found that only one, Staten Island’s Midland Beach, was being operated in a “satisfactory” manner. Brooklyn’s Manhattan Beach, the Bronx’s Orchard Beach, Staten Island’s South Beach and Queens’ Rockaway Beach were rated as “challenged,” while Coney Island/Brighton Beach in Brooklyn and Wolfe’s Pond Beach in Staten Island were both judged to be failing. The group’s report noted that many Parks Department beaches have shorelines littered with unsafe objects like broken glass and do not have enough lifeguards on watch. more [AMNY]
