New plans for Washington Sq. Park

The Parks Dept. received a chilly reception from residents and elected officials yesterday when it released its latest proposal for overhauling Washington Square Park. The new plan mostly conforms to specifications requested by Council Speaker Christine Quinn and Councilman Alan Gerson after the Parks Dept.’s old plan–which involved aligning the fountain with the arch and building a 4-foot fence around the park’s perimeter–were nixed by a lawsuit in 2005. Many Village residents who viewed the latest plans last night, however, said the new proposal still does not speak to community concerns. more [Sun]
