Gristedes closes shop on CPW

After more than half a century overlooking Central Park, the Gristedes supermarket in the Century condominium is shuttering its doors. The store, at 25 Central Park West, closed over the weekend. The last of the supermarket’s equipment will be moved into storage or trashed tomorrow, according to John Catsimatidis, the owner of the Red Apple Group, which owns Gristedes. With a marked rent increase, the supermarket chain cannot afford to stay in business at the location. The space is currently being marketed to salons and wine distributors. By Lauren Elkies
