Council Speaker opposes demolition of St. Vincent’s Hospital buildings

City Council Speaker Christine Quinn, speaking through an aide at yesterday’s Landmark Preservation Commission hearing, said she is opposed to the plan to demolish several St. Vincent’s Hospital buildings in the Greenwich Village Historic District. The hospital wants to move to a new $800 million, 21-story building on the site of its O’Toole Building, which would be demolished. The Rudin Management Company would demolish old hospital buildings and build an $800 million complex, which would include a 21-story condo tower and new townhouses. “What we want to do is to find a way for a 21st-century world-class hospital to coexist with historic Greenwich Village,” Quinn said. “We think there is potential here to make changes to the plan that would allow the hospital to move forward while preserving the historic context of the neighborhood.”
